Man Charged With Stealing Money From Donation Boxes At Long Island Churches

A man wanted for a drug charge was implicated and arrested for allegedly stealing from a donation box at a Long Island church, police said.

Nassau County Police said that multiple times in August last year, a suspect entered St. Agnes Cathedral on Quealy Place in Rockville Centre while it was closed.

On Aug. 20 and Aug. 27, the suspect entered the church and pried open a donation box to steal an undisclosed amount of cash.

On Wednesday, Feb. 19, Queens Village resident Alexander Barone, 30, was taken into police custody by the Long Beach Police Department on an open warrant for criminal possession of a controlled substance, Nassau County Police announced.

Further investigation determined that he was the suspect involved in the St. Agnes Cathedral robberies.

Police said that Barone was also responsible for burglaries at the church on Aug. 27 last year and on Monday, Jan. 20 this year.

Barone was arrested and charged with three counts of third-degree burglary and one count of criminal possession of a controlled substance.

He was held overnight and scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Thursday, Feb. 20.
